Florida is Getting the Message

(NewsUSA) - In the midst of another bustling school year, the state of Florida is continuing to make sure its school systems have quick, efficient communication within their communities should they be faced with an unexpected emergency situation. Whether it's a minor school-related closing or a violent hurricane, should trouble come their way, information can be sent with the click of a mouse.

After subscribing to the service last year, Florida has renewed its contract to use the mass notification system known as IRIS (Immediate Response Information System). Notification systems are growing in prevalence and importance -; and with due cause. With such threats as terrorist attacks, school shootings and natural disasters, systems that quickly and automatically notify citizens of emergencies are becoming a necessity.

IRIS, developed by Texas-based company TechRadium, Inc., electronically sends routine, priority and emergency messages from school officials to multiple contacts throughout the community, including family members, emergency personnel and others. The IRIS system has the ability to distribute voice and text alerts through a cell phone, e-mail, PDA and pager. If one device does not yield a response, the system automatically tries another, until confirmed contact is made.

"We are very excited to see that an entire state is so technologically proactive when informing parents as well as protecting children," said Ryan Rodkey, chief executive officer of TechRadium.

Rodkey said that state-of-the-art technology like IRIS not only allows messages to be broadcast to large numbers of people in a short time period, but it's also cheap -; costing only pennies per day. "That's a small price to pay to save children's lives," he said.

By continuing to utilize this technology, the Florida Department of Education has already sent its first message -; a message that makes children's safety paramount. In this age of digital communication, it's getting easier than ever before to send out an emergency notification to better protect our nation's children.
